On June 12, 2020, surgical residents from West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and Marshall University in Huntington took part in the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) course. This course was offered by the WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute in partnership with the Departments of Pathology, Anatomy and Lab Medicine. Dr. Daniel Grabo has directed this course locally and nationally for the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT).

Students perform critical trauma procedures on fresh, perfused cadavers in this high-fidelity, dynamic model. Since 2018, the WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute, under the direction of Dr. Alison Wilson, has offered this course to surgical residents at WVU in Morgantown. Dr. David Borgstrom is the surgical residency program director and has incorporated this highly valuable course into the general surgery residents’ curriculum. For the first time, surgical residents from all three West Virginia training programs were able to participate in this course without the need to travel outside the state. Dr. Grabo served as the course director and Dr. Borgstom, Dr. Tiffany Lasky, Trauma Director at CAMC, and Dr. Lauren Dudas, associate program director at WVU Morganton, served as course instructors.

This course is geared for senior level surgical residents, fellows and attendings who practice trauma surgery and is made available throughout the year at the WVU Fresh Tissue Training Program (FTTP) in Morgantown. Please contact: ashley.brumley@wvumedicine.org for details.
