CME REQUIREMENTS

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) REQUIREMENTS FOR WEST VIRGINIA

The West Virginia State Board of Medical Examiners and the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine both require all licensees to earn a minimum number of CME Credits and content-specific CME for license renewal. The requirements are detailed below:

WEST VIRGINIA BOARD OF MEDICINE CME REQUIREMENTS:

    • 50 Total credit hours every two-year renewal cycle: Physicians licensed by the West Virginia Board of Medicine must complete 50 hours of Continuing Medical Education every two-year renewal cycle, 30 of which must be in the licensee’s speciality.  
    • 3 Credit hours addressing Controlled Substances and Prescribing: Physicians who have prescribed, administered, or dispensed any controlled substance pursuant to a West Virginia license in the two-year license cycle preceding renewal, are required to complete 3-hours of Board-approved CME in drug diversion training and best practice prescribing of controlled substances training during each reporting period.

WEST VIRGINIA BOARD OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE CME REQUIREMENTS:

  • 32 Total credit hours every two-year renewal cycle: Physicians licensed by the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine must complete 32 CME Credit hours during every two-year renewal cycle. A minimum of 16 of the hours must be completed through activities accredited for AOA Category 1A or AB Credit.
  • 3 Credit hours addressing Prescribing Practices: Licensees who prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances must complete a three-hour board-approved course on the topic of Prescribing Practices every two-year renewal cycle. The CME course must receive prior approval from the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine to be accepted.
