History of the West Virginia Committee on Trauma

Committees

The Office of Emergency Medical Services is served by several committees who provide advice and guidance to the Office.

 

Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (EMSAC) —  The purpose of this committee is developing, with the commissioner, standards for emergency medical service personnel and for the purpose of providing advice to the office of emergency medical services and the commissioner with respect to reviewing and making recommendations for, and providing assistance to, the establishment and maintenance of adequate emergency medical services for all portions of this state.”

Medical Policy and Care Committee (MPCC) —  This committee is composed of each regional medical director and may include physicians representing speciality areas such as paediatrics, trauma, cardiology and others as necessary. The committee serves as the primary policy-making body and advisory body to the EMS Medical Director concerning medical issues involving the EMS system. The committee shall meet at least annually, or more frequently as necessary.

State Trauma Advisory Council (STAC) —This committee is composed of stakeholders representing all components of the West Virginia Trauma System: Level I, II, III, IV trauma centres, non-designated rural hospitals, ACEP, aeromedical, pediatric surgery, the WV state trauma registry, pre-hospital, the general public, and rehabilitation services, and the WV American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

It provides advice to the Office of Emergency Medical Services, and the Commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health regarding the development and administration of a statewide trauma system and to provide technical assistance and advice in the development of standardized policy and procedures for trauma centre operation and designation.

Emergency Medical Services for Children Committee (EMSC) — The purpose of this Committee is to assure that children receive optimal emergency medical care and that critical aspects of injury prevention are addressed by ensuring that all performance measures are met. The Committee will formulate recommendations on issues pertaining to emergency medical services for children on behalf of the WV Office of Emergency Medical Services. The existence of the EMSC Advisory Committee is a mandated requirement of the Federal EMSC grant.
